Short answer: spot means the parts are on hand and can ship the same or next working day; backorder means they must be ordered from the manufacturer or a franchised distributor and lead time is quoted in weeks. To get an accurate lead time, give four things at once: the full part number with suffix, the quantity, the packaging you need (full reel, cut tape or loose), and your required delivery date.
Lead times are usually misquoted because one of those four is missing. STM32F103C8T6 and STM32F103C8T6TR are the same die in different packaging, with different pricing and availability. Ten pieces and ten thousand pieces can differ by weeks. If your pick-and-place line needs tape and reel, say so up front.
When a quotation comes back, check three details: whether the lead time means "ships in N working days" or "arrives on a date", whether date code and condition requirements are written down, and what happens if a backorder slips — partial shipment, cancellation, or price protection.
When lead times stretch, secure the long-lead critical parts first, qualify pin-compatible alternatives to keep the project moving, and build buffer into the production plan. Expediting always costs more than planning ahead.
