AO3401 alternatives: check the real gate voltage first
The AO3401 is a P-channel MOSFET in SOT-23, often used as a high-side load switch. A replacement that needs a larger VGS to reach low RDS(on) can run hot on a 3.3 V or 5 V board.
Measure how the gate is actually driven
Document the gate circuit and the real VGS available at turn-on. Similar names such as AO3401A, DMG2301L and SI2301 can differ in threshold, voltage rating and on-resistance. In a 24 V rail, a lower-voltage part is not an acceptable substitute for a 30 V device.
For a high-side switch, the source is not fixed at ground. Always measure VGS with respect to the source rather than assuming the controller output voltage is the gate drive.
Same package, different thermal result
SOT-23 thermal performance depends on copper area. RDS(on) increases with temperature, and the resulting power loss raises temperature further. Calculate dissipation at maximum load and ambient, then compare against the actual PCB layout.
Gate charge and input capacitance affect switching speed. Fast switching loads expose edge and spike differences, while static load switches place more emphasis on RDS(on) and long-term reliability.
Test with the real load
Run maximum input voltage and real load current, then inspect inrush, dropout, turn-off spikes and temperature. Motor, relay and capacitive loads need additional evaluation of reverse energy.

Common questions
They may serve similar functions, but threshold, RDS(on), voltage rating and manufacturer specification must be compared against the actual drive and load.
Measure gate-to-source voltage directly. In a high-side circuit the source voltage changes with the load and supply.
The package alone does not determine current. Check RDS(on), ambient temperature, copper area and junction temperature.
