Hot-Swap Protection for DC/DC Converters Using Damping Resistors

In a power converter, input capacitors connect to the supply through cabling with parasitic inductance. On first insertion — a hot-swap event — that inductance causes input ringing that can approach twice the DC input voltage.

With insufficient input damping and no inrush control, the ringing can exceed device ratings and damage the converter.

The design sets clear requirements on the damping resistor's value and power rating, and on the voltage headroom of the input capacitors; the two have to be designed together. Kewei Technology can supply alloy resistors, TVS diodes and electrolytic capacitors as a kit matched to the reference design.

Kewei's take: what this means for procurement

With passives, package and tolerance matter more than brand. Substitution is usually wide, so confirm a few interchangeable part numbers in advance and you have a buffer when lead times stretch.
